5 Ways To Have a More Meaningful Summer

The solstice is right around the corner, marking the first official day of summer. With summer comes more sun, warmer days, outdoor festivals, farmers markets, flowy skirts, swimsuits, barbecues and pools.

We spend months eagerly preparing for summer’s arrival. We have our entire wardrobe ready months in advance, jam-pack our weekends full with barbecues and pool parties, fantasizing about the perfect tan.

Then all of a sudden it’s September, summer has come and gone and we’ve been so go-go-go that we can’t even remember what we did.

This year, rather than focusing on stacking your weekends full with fun summer activities or how to look your best in the new swimsuit you just bought or who’s going to throw the best pool party, let’s focus on what summer is really about. Let’s make this a summer to remember!

Think back to when you were a child and so excited to be on summer vacation, to be able to play in the sun all day with no school, no homework, no pressure. You were free.

Of course, most of us cannot take 3 full months off from life anymore, but we can channel our inner child and live the next few months carefree and happy.

This summer, I encourage every single one of you to slow down and really soak in all that summer has to offer. This is a time to relax, rejuvenate and just have fun. After all, the term “solstice” is derived from the Latin term solstitium – which contains the word sol (meaning “the sun”) and sistere (meaning “to make stand”). The way I interpret this, it means to stand still or slow your pace and enjoy the sunshine! Here are some ways to savor your summer months:

  • 1. Go on a vacation - And I mean a real vacation, not a quick weekend trip away from home. No, a full one or two week long vacation where you fully unplug. No checking emails, no taking work calls, limited time on social media - a true break to recharge and destress.
  •

  • 2. Get up with the sun - Wake up and watch the sunrise, go on a walk around your neighborhood and enjoy the quiet sounds of a city just waking up. Everything will seem simpler in those moments.
  •

  • 3. Go to the water - Don’t wait until your friends are available or until all your work is done, take the afternoon off, find a body of water and jump in it. Then spend some time drying off while reading a book or taking a nap. If you don’t have a body of water close to you, put your swimsuit on and run through some sprinklers!
  •

  • 4. Don’t make plans - Don’t jam pack your days full with activities and make sure you spend an entire day lounging around doing nothing. It’s okay to be bored sometimes, it’s good for the brain.
  •

  • 5. Enjoy the outdoors - have a picnic outside, go to an outdoor movie, play at a playground, go berry picking, stop by your local farmers market, eat a s’more at a bonfire, stop the ice cream man and try to eat a cone before it melts, sit on your front porch as the sun sets watching fireflies.
  •

  • Summer is a break, it's a time to be free, to slow down and recharge. Nothing lasts forever, so slow down while you can. Summer will be gone before you know it, so take your time, enjoy it and cherish every moment.
